Experimental Investigations on Hydro-mechanical Processes in Reconstituted Clay Shale and Their Significance for Constitutive Modelling

Abstract The hydro-mechanical processes of a reconstituted clay shale (Opalinus Clay) were studied and implications for constitutive modelling swellable shales derived. study aims to provide further insights into these coupled processes. For that, oedometric swelling tests with varying boundary conditions loading paths, compression under dry saturated conditions, permeability performed. results showed unique preloading line the state when plotting void ratio against vertical stress. states, this was shifted left (to smaller stresses) which revealed severe reduction stress due saturation. All paths converged in normal (NCL) regardless mechanical during A trend affine NCL established pressures at different initial ratios. influence saturation on properties became evident, as un-/reloading stiffness significantly reduced. linear relationship between volumetric deformation found. induced demonstrated confirmed by analysis consolidation loading. experimental findings used derive fundamental assumptions discussed within numerical framework expansive soils.
